I am not usually one to leave review comments… but I certainly read a BUNCH of reviews on cases for my iPhone 3G. THANK YOU to all those who wrote reviews and helped me pick the Otterbox Defender case! This case is awesome. VERY durable, all functions are accessible… and yes, the oil slicking effect is sometimes present, but easily fixed.

The ONLY issue I had when I installed the case was that immediately after I installed the case, almost 95% of all people I talked to said they heard an echo every time they spoke (you know, when you say something and a second later you hear it in your ear piece… ANNOYING!).

I was bummed because the case is built like a tank and already saved my phone from a 6′ drop onto the asphalt in the rain. Though, I decided to remove the felt pieces that cover the mic and ear pieces since they are only there to prevent possible drops of water hitting those phone components directly. Once I removed those pieces, not one person complains of hearing the echo anymore! Strange, but it worked… so I wanted to pa*s it on.

The echo was the ONLY issue I had with this case… it’s the best case I could find and WELL worth the money. I recommend it to everyone I see with an iPhone now

This is a fine case that will protect your iPhone better than most other cases.

Pros:

-Very durable. I would feel very safe using it for outdoor activities like biking, running, hiking, skiing (but it’s not waterproof), camping, etc.

-You can use all buttons on the phone.

-Durable belt clip has an extra feature that makes it easy to attach to your belt.

Cons:

-Very, very difficult to detach the case from the belt holster.

-The rubber/silicone outer cover often gets bunched up when you attach it to the belt holster.

-Most importantly, the built in screen protector gets splotchy and greasy easily, almost as if there’s condensation or liquid between the screen protector and the iPhone’s screen. The only way to remove it is to take the phone out of the case and clean it off which is a nuisance.

Conclusion: It doesn’t make a very good “everyday” case. I only recommend purchasing it if you’re an avid outdoorsman. For everyday use, find another case.

After spending for a package of crystal film covers at the Apple store (I peeled an old, scratched one off the cover, went to use the spare that was included only to find that it had gathered dust and lint under the cover) and ruining the one screen protector that came with my new Speck Candyshell case (it had a piece of lint underneath that caused it to bubble), I figured I would take a chance on these screen protectors as I knew I didn’t need anything fancy, just something to keep my keys from scratching my screen in my purse.

It was a great decision. Not only are they cheap, there are 5 of them. They are all packaged individually in their own plastic sleeve (no dust/lint collection from saving them in your desk!) and they all come with a cleaning cloth. I was initially confused by the double layer covers that you peel off the actual screen, but I actually prefer this to a regular screen protector that you peel from the backing only and apply.

I watched a great YouTube video showing you how to apply these types of screen protectors that have the dual backings. If you peel away the first layer as you apply the cover (this way your fingers do not ever have to touch the actual protector since you are touching the backing) and use a credit card to smooth out bubbles as you go, it comes out great. Then you peel off the top layer and it’s perfect.

I am really glad I searched for these. Great value for what you get. Also, their customer service is great. Very responsive.

Just received these, and was pleasantly surprised. I’ve worked with one other type of screen protector (the ones you have to cut out yourself), but don’t consider myself an expert by any means.

As others have posted, the product comes as 5 separately-packaged screen protectors. I’ve only opened one so far, and it contained the screen protector and a piece of cloth. The cloth appears useless, so I threw it away.

The screen protector has protective film on both sides, and a tab affixed to each film, labeled 1 and 2. You simply peel off film #1, then apply the screen protector to your iPhone, then peel off film #2. Again, I’m not an expert by any means, but it worked perfectly for me on the first try. Here’s what I did:

- First, I cleaned my iPhone screen completely, using the cloth that came with my phone.

- I positioned the phone horizontally on a table in front if me, so that the top of the phone was on my left, and the bottom of the phone on my right.

- I peeled off film #1, and holding it lightly by the edges with both hands, aligned the top of the film with the top of the phone, without letting it actually touch the screen yet

- Then I started with the top of the phone (my left hand), and set the first inch or so of the film down onto the phone, while keeping the rest of the protector off the surface with my right hand.

- I rubbed the bubbles out of the top section using my left hand, and then lifted my right hand up slightly and brought it towards my left a little. This curved the screen protector, and I was able to then lay it down on the phone moving slowly towards the bottom of the phone in a smooth, even manner.

Hope that makes sense, but I think the key was having the protector bend a little so that it laid down uniformly from side to side. When I was done, I just rubbed a few bubbles out of the very bottom of the phone and it was nearly perfect.

I don’t see any of the rainbow effect mentioned by another reviewer, and this protector doesn’t interfere with my case (CaseCrown) because my case covers the top edges of the phone. So, overall very satisfied with the protector, and should get a lot of mileage out of them since I have 4 more to use.

P.S. Those who complained about bits of glue being left behind may have tried to remove the tab from the outer film, when in fact you are supposed to remove the entire sheet of protective film using the tab. This could also explain the rainbow effect some have seen, if they inadvertently left the top layer of protective film on the screen protector.

This is a great looking case. I really liked the metallic, yet somehow soft, red finish. In addition, it’s molded around the front of the case in such a way as to expose a bit of the chrome frame around the edge of the phone which is a nice touch. I’ve received many compliments on it. l I was concerned about the ring “button” on the back being a problem but it hasn’t been an issue. My only complaint is that it’s a bit difficult to remove the bottom half of the case if you want to use the phone in a dock. It’s certainly easier than most cases, but not quite as nice as the Slider Incase Slider Case for iPhone 3G – Black (CL59055). But the incredible appearance and lower bulk of this case more than outweigh that disadvantage.

Pros:

Goes on and off easily.

Can remove the bottom half to use a dock.

Easy access to all controls.

Fits snugly to the phone and locks on.

Has “felt” pads inside to protect the phone’s finish.

Allows the chrome edge of the phone to be seen.

Cons:

Release button on the back makes the phone rock slightly when typing on a hard surface.

Removing the bottom to dock isn’t quite as easy as I’d like.

Good looking case, great price. I was so happy the day I got it and for the first 7 days. Normally I take covers off to clean phone and rid it of any dust trapped behind. To my horror the backside was badly scratched after the first removal. Now every time I pull the cover off, many new scratches appear around the curved edges and around the camera lense. My more expensive contour cover had never scratched the back of the phone before but it is now trashed thanks to the I frogz product. Looks good, works OK!
