Has Dexter ruined all of future TV for me?

By

Dexter is the greatest thing I have ever viewed on a screen of any sort. Friends tell me about other shows to watch, but I don’t think anything will come close (to Dexter) and I just don’t bother. I also fear that each season of Dexter couldn’t possibly compare to the last. So far I’ve been lucky. Any Dexter lovers out there that can recommend some other shows for me?

Although I’ve never seen it, I was once talking to a fellow dexter fan and they recommended Nip Tuck as a show I would like.

Get Netflix and watch the only 3 seasons of Veronica Mars. Wow!

I enjoyed Nip Tuck too, but VM is better.

Also, Arrested Development.

I watched all of those after Dexter got me watching TV again.

A lot of people seem to ask this question.

But there are two problems answering it.

One is that “Dexter” is unique. You’re not going to find many other shows examining the life of a serial killer as the protagonist.

The other is that few who ask the question bother to mention what it is they like about the show. Different people like it for different reasons. Some like it as a psychological profile of the character (Dexter), some like it as a suspenseful crime drama, some like the mystery and crime-solving elements, some like it due to the violent action & bloodletting, some like it as a vengeance/vigilante fantasy, some like the uncensored sexual elements, some like the fact that Dexter is successfully concealing a dark secret and pretending to be normal, some even like the soap opera aspects (such as his relationship with Rita, or Deb’s romances).

So those various people would probably be looking for different kinds of shows. For instance, the ones who like it for the sex & violence might enjoy “True Blood”, but those who like “Dexter” as a crime drama/mystery probably wouldn’t, and might prefer something more traditional like “CSI:Miami” or “Bones” (which also contains a fairly high level of gruesome visuals, at least when you consider it’s a network show).

But you’re never going to find anything exactly like “Dexter”. It’s one of a kind.
