Is there a way to use a computer monitor as a television?
ByI have a 23″ 1080p computer monitor with no tuner or speakers built in. Is there some sort of external tuner I can buy to use the monitor like a television(allowing me to hook up a cable connection to some box, which then would go to the monitor)? And how would I handle speaker output?

You can buy a USB TV tuner for relatively cheap. Plug it in, install any provided software/drivers and you are away. If you want external speakers, plug them into your computer. It all works as if your computer was a TV.

If you have digital HD cable TV service, all you need to do is connect that monitor to the digital HD cable box.
Digital HD cable boxes usually have DVI or HDMI outputs, which you can connect directly to an 1080p monitor. The digital HD cable box serves as the TV tuner.
You connect it to your monitor using a digital video cable with the right ends. Either standard HDMI, standard DVI, or DVI-to-HDMI.
Hope this helps.

I personally use the HDMI to DVI solution on a 23″ Dell using a High Definition DVB-T Set Top Box and a cable like this: . No computer required.
For sound I use the optical digital audio output to my home theatre, however it’s also perfectly fine to use the red and white RCA audio sockets with appropriate adapter/s and/or cables that cost next to nothing. Get an adapter like this and you can use headphones or PC speakers: . Many Stereos have an auxilliary RCA audio input in which case you won’t even need an adapter.
It’s only a cheap Set Top Box (works perfectly though) and the setup cost me about a third of what the cheapest 1080p tvs do.
