Grammy winner and American Idol alumna Mandisa died suddenly on Thursday, April 18, 2024, at her home in Nashville, according to a post on her official Facebook page. Mandisa was found dead at her home on Thursday. The cause of the death was not immediately known. Mandisa grew up in Citrus Heights. She appeared on American Idol before releasing six albums; she competed on season five of the show and went on to become a successful Christian recording artist. Her album “Overcomer” won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album in 2014.
Mandisa Early Life and Education in Citrus Heights:
Mandisa Lynn Hundley was born on October 2, 1976, in Citrus Heights, California. Mandisa grew up in Sacramento where she sang at church and studied vocal performance at American River College. She continued her studies at Fisk University in Nashville where she was a member of the Fisk Jubilee Singers. After college, Mandisa worked as a session and backup vocalist for Trisha Yearwood and Shania Twain.
Rise to Stardom on American Idol Season 5:
In 2006, Mandisa first jumped into the spotlight after she was allowed to be on season five of American Idol. She did very well throughout that season, even making it to the top 10. However, even though Mandisa did not win the competition, she still went on to become one of the most respected and well-loved Christian artists.

In 2007, Mandisa released her very first album, “True Beauty,” which debuted at number one on the top Christian albums chart. She went on to release six albums throughout her career, with multiple number-one hits. Mandisa was also a Grammy Award winner, being nominated for several awards over the years. Throughout her career, Mandisa released five more albums, including an acclaimed 2008 holiday album titled “It’s Christmas.” Her most recent album, “Out of the Dark,” was released in 2017. Four of her six albums earned Mandisa Grammy nominations in either the Best Pop Contemporary Gospel Album category or Best Contemporary Christian Music Album. The California native ultimately took home her first Grammy for her 2013 album, “Overcomer.”

She ultimately credited an intervention from her friends and loved ones for helping her.
