The first time I saw Inside Out I loved it. I thought it was one of Pixar Animation Studios best movies. One of the things I loved about it was how fresh the story felt and how the movie explored themes of human emotions in a profound yet accessible way for adults and children. Thankfully, “Inside Out 2” does much of the same. This time, the movie explores these themes from the perspective of a teenage Riley. Riley is now 13, and the story is set in the summer before she goes to high school. She’s at hockey camp when she learns that her best friends are going to a different school, throwing her whole summer into chaos. We follow her as she grapples with all these changes, trying to make new friends and impress the girls on the high school hockey team, figuring out what her life will be like without her friends.
Character Development
New emotions such as envy, embarrassment, and anxiety enter the picture, while joy, sadness, anger, and the other original emotions try to understand why Riley is changing. The film does an excellent job of showing how Riley deals with these new emotions and the external pressures she faces. As these changes happen, we see her external reactions and what’s happening inside her mind. The voice performances are stellar, with returning cast members and new additions bringing authenticity and nuance to their roles.

As you know, Pixar is known for its rich animation style, and it’s on full display here with Inside Out 2. I also liked how they included other animation styles throughout the movie. I won’t say what they are or what they do with that because it’s a fun surprise. I also appreciated how different aspects of Riley’s mind were represented through the animation. You’re not just exploring her emotions; there are parts of her mind that you go into, like memory and her personality, and how those things are designed and displayed. I thought it was well done.
Audience Reception and Critique
If I were to have one criticism about Inside Out 2, and it’s a small one, it’s that I don’t think it does as good of a job utilizing all the different emotions like the first movie did. The first movie has Joy and the other emotions, and Joy is kind of the main emotion, but you still get other aspects of the other emotions. With the second movie, you have all the emotions from the first movie plus all these new emotions, and I think there were many times throughout the story where different emotions like envy or embarrassment could have been used a little bit more. Anxiety kind of takes center stage, which makes sense for the story they’re telling and what Riley’s going through, but I felt like some of those other emotions could have taken less of a back seat and been a little more useful.
